Joel Mabus has been a fixture on the North American Folk, Americana, and Roots music scene for more than 45 years, since his first LP was released in 1978. This is his long-awaited 28th solo album. He’s known primarily as a clever & insightful songwriter with an instrumental prowess in roots-based traditions. But this album is a marked departure. This collection is a re-thinking and revival of the rich popular music of a century ago — the music of the Lost Generation in the late 1920’s. Not “roaring 20s” razzmatazz, but rather a suite of fluid acoustic guitar with a friendly baritone voice in an intimate space. And some surprisingly pro-vocative lyrics.
The songs will lead you from Broadway shows to Texas dance halls. Argentine cafés to Mississippi railroads. Highbrow and lowbrow. From Gershwin to Jimmie Rodgers. All on a carpet-ride of fingerstyle acoustic guitar. Recorded without dubbing or synthesized tricks, it is an up-close & intimate session with a mature artist and his music. One voice and one guitar in conversation. A contemplation.
