ABOUT JOE P AND "GARDEN CITY VAMPIRE":
The debut album from Joe P, "Garden State Vampire" mostly came to life very late at night in his New Jersey basement, where the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist often spent hours on end dreaming up songs that follow their own charmed and reckless logic. “At some point my sleep schedule was so flipped that I was never getting any sunlight. After a while it made me feel crazy, but there’s something great about losing myself in the process and feeling like I can do whatever I want, because there’s no one else around.”
Mainly produced by Parella—a lifelong musician who plays guitar, bass, drums, keys and synth on the LP—"Garden State Vampire" centers on the frenetic form of alt-rock he’s brought to the stage in headlining multiple tours and opening for Cold War Kids, beabadoobee, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and more. Along with his AAA radio #1 hit “Off My Mind,” the album brings his unruly yet sophisticated musicality to strangely poignant songs like “Birthday Baby (The Girl with No Smile),” a wistful collision of garage-punk and symphonic pop. With his co-writers/producers, including Gabe Simon (Meg Myers, Noah Kahan) and James Flannigan (Weezer, Broods), "Garden State Vampire" lends an equally potent emotionality to “Violet” (an unexpectedly tender track inspired by the birth of a friend’s daughter), and “Lily” (a sweetly folky serenade penned for the younger sister of his wife) delivers a sublimely fun outburst of frustration and desire. And on “guilt. hole.,” punchy basslines and fuzzed-out riffs merge in a moody anti-anthem that eventually gave the LP its title (from the opening lines: “I am a passenger inside of my skin/Garden State vampire with no blood to drink/I threw a party and hid under the bed/Popped all the good champagne once everyone left”).
A North Jersey native who took up guitar in kindergarten and started writing songs after discovering artists like Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, Parella played in bands for most of his life but began working on his own material when the pandemic led to the demise of his longtime band. After an early version of “Off My Mind” went viral, he landed a deal with Neon Gold/Atlantic Records and soon set to work on "Garden State Vampire." Not only a nod to the nocturnal tendencies that fueled the album’s creation (and an allusion to Bruce Springsteen’s debut album "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J."), the album’s title echoes Joe P’s deep affection for both the beautiful and ugly facets of his beloved homeland—an element that extends to the album’s cover art (shot in one of the most sordid areas of the Garden State Parkway), as well as his decision to film all his music videos in New Jersey. “One of the reasons I named the album 'Garden State Vampire' is that I really thrive in being in a place that no one pays much attention to, instead of living in Nashville or L.A. or New York like a lot of people in the music business,” he says. “It’s kind of nice to feel like I’m alone on a different planet, where the only thing that matters is staying true to whatever these songs want to be.”
