LAND AND SEA brings together the work of four artists - ceramicists and printmakers - inspired by the wonders of the natural world. The collection is invigorated by their different and individual interpretations of familiar things - plants, birds, fish and other animals. The textures and patterns of nature have inspired JANIE ILBERY’s new collection of hand-built stoneware bowls.
Ceramicist and printmaker NANCY MURGATROYD uses traditional sgraffito techniques in a fresh and contemporary way to decorate her hand formed stoneware.
Plants, birds and pumpkins have inspired JO PENN’s mix of functional pieces and sculptural forms.
NICK PENN uses experiments in printmaking to recall five minutes in February witnessing the sensuous courtship of a pair of cormorants.
JO PENN and JANIE ILBERY take their inspiration from the natural world to form functional ceramics and sculptural forms. Their love of plants shines through in their work using flowers, leaves, ferns, pumpkins and natural found objects to create texture, shape and colour.
For NANCY MURGATROYD, making handmade prints or ceramics is wonderfully addictive. Drawing an image, cutting and printing a lino, scratching sgraffito on clay all bring ideas out of obscurity to the point where they can be shared. Both techniques make it necessary to find the essence of the idea, however curious. The lines, shapes, rhythms and patterns are timeless forms of communication, leaving space for the viewer to interpret the work in their own personal way. Do dive in and enjoy!
‘FIVE MINUTES IN FEBRUARY’ One of the best ways to observe nature is to sit quietly, to wait and to watch. NICK PENN’s passion is to draw and paint en plein air responding, as he works, to changes in the light and the natural world. This body of work is based on a morning in February when he was drawing the low winter sun rising over Rosemullion Head. As the tide receded the cormorants gathered on the rock below High Cliff to dry their wings and preen themselves. Nick’s patience was richly rewarded when, for five minutes, he was able to record in his sketchbook a pair of cormorants performing their sensuous courtship display. He has interpreted this enchanting moment using techniques of woodcut, linocut, collagraph, etching and monoprint.
