Two Magnum photographers join us for a special MPF artist talk double bill. Jim Goldberg and Alessandra Sanguinetti will be visiting Bristol during a rare trip to the UK and stopping off at the Foundation where each will give a talk about their creative practice, followed by a conversation with Martin Parr and a book signing.
Alessandra Sanguinetti's intimate portraiture and collaborative social documentary explores human connection. She has been recognised through many awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Hasselblad Foundation Grant and a John Gutmann Photography Fellowship.
With his innovative and multidisciplinary approach to documentary, Jim Goldberg - known for his seminal work Raised by Wolves, 1995 - is a landmark photographer, bookmaker and social practitioner.
Alessandra will begin the evening by discussing her current work on the daily life of Palestinian society, following which she'll share other projects including The Adventures of Guille and Beli.
For this work Alessandra has been photographing the lives of Guillermina and Belinda for more than two decades, two cousins living in rural Argentina, as they move through childhood and youth toward womanhood. The farmlands of western Buenos Aires province are a particular mix of modern and traditional, where life is lived in consonance with animals and rugged landscapes. Depicting the lives of women and girls within this conventionally masculine environment, Alessandra interrogates the frameworks of mythologies of all kinds, honouring lives that are usually unseen.
Jim will then talk about his first photobook, Rich and Poor, for which he documented communities living in San Francisco, published in 1985.
'The representation of poverty is at once political and personal, revealing as much about society as it does about the person who documents it. But what is universal, is that the stories are never just about poverty; they are about powerlessness, prejudice, stigma, suppression and a myriad of other complex structures of suffering.' - Jim Goldberg
He'll then discuss his latest book, Coming and Going, published by MACK, 2023. In this photobook Jim uses singular photographs, combined imagery, personal notes, collages, and ephemera to capture the bittersweet realities of life. Jim will also share new work he is currently making in Arkansas.
Following the presentations they'll be joined by Martin Parr for a conversation on photography, with questions from the floor and a book signing where many of Alessandra and Jim's publications will be available from MPF bookshop.
