What began as JJ3: A Tribute to Medeski, Martin and Wood has now evolved into a whole different animal. The trio captured lightning in a bottle during their last performance here, actualizing their ultimate intention to color outside the lines of conformity. Driven by a living, breathing connection with the improvisational muse and a love for each other, these three musicians are tapped in to realms of infinite possibility. If you were at the Crazy Horse on November 16, you witnessed the trio settling in to a breathtaking comfort zone within their own experimental sound laboratory. They blew their own minds – not to mention ours – again and again, unspooling an endless stream of brilliant sonic epiphanies. The ensuing results were infectiously funky, cerebrally mind-altering and conceptually invigorating.
The project all began as the brainchild of keyboard wizard Jesse Jennings. Formerly a member of The Higgs, Jambassadors and Band Beyond Description guest, these days he plays very rarely. Thus, when he does, he treats the experience with the sacred reverence of a Buddhist monk ascending a mystical mountain. His wingmen on this journey are a pair of Berklee grads and genius musicians in their own rite. On both upright acoustic bass and electric is a CH favorite, Daniel “Dellow” Roholt (Caltucky). He is as much of a joy to watch as he is to hear. Then on drums is the young savant, Jeff Carter (Moxie Barker). These cats channel the innovations of Chris Wood and Billy Martin, while being nothing more or less than their true, authentic selves.
The music you’ll hear is mostly all-instrumental improvisation, although last time they began to include some vocal interludes and even a cover song or two. Yet everything is done in a way that is not reminiscent of anything you’ve ever heard. We’re all about empowering musicians to jump off the ledge here at the Crazy Horse and spread their wings. This band represents that concept in the ultimate sense.
