Jelle Van Giel ⸱ batterie, soundscapes, compositions/Roeland Celis ⸱ guitare/Ewout Pierreux ⸱ piano, rhodes/ Yannick Peeters ⸱contrebasse After a successful EP release in 2024, All I Hear, the highly anticipated debut full album, will be released on September 12 via the renowned W.E.R.F. Records.
Rooted in jazz and improvisation, Close Distance Band expands its sonic palette with atmospheric indie rock influences and cinematic soundscapes. At the heart of the project lies the rich interplay between piano and guitar, resulting in a sound which is melodic, energetic, captivating and full of color. Van Giel cites artists like Aaron Parks, James Francies, Gilad Hekselman and Mike Moreno as key inspirations.
Drummer and composer Jelle Van Giel (°1986) is no stranger to the jazz, film music, and even in wind band (hafabra) scenes. A graduate of the conservatories of Antwerp, The Hague, and Brussels, he has performed with legends such as Toots Thielemans, Bert Joris, and Jef Neve. With his previous ensemble, the Jelle Van Giel Group, he released three albums showcasing his refined, layered approach to composition and arrangement. Now, with Close Distance Band, founded in 2023, he continues his musical journey, yet this time with a more electronic and cinematic sound.
The first two singles from the album, The Secret of Bluebell and Within This World, are already streaming and gaining praise. Belgian music website Luminous Dash called the music “soothing, summery jazz of the highest order” and highlighted “the melodic strength and the open, optimistic sound the quartet creates” as key to its appeal.
