BIO:

Dr. L. David Stewart aka NIZM, is a JB skater from Chicago Illinois. NIZM has been skating for a total of 33 years and of those 3 were of formal training as a figure skater. NIZM is a founding member of the Chicago JB Skate collective known as Suicide Kings (SK) (Founded in 2003). Also NIZM, is a hip-hop artist, who wrote the Adrenaline Award nominated anthem, “Skate Music” (2009). NIZM also was a consultant on the Emmy nominated United Skates documentary (2018). Most recently, NIZM was an author in the Evolution of Skating Vol 1 (2021), where he speaks on some of the JB skating history and his upbringing in it from his perspective.

Nizm’s approach to skating is that of a dancer, that believes in working with the music as a form of expression. “Music and movement are to be in collaboration not competition as a skater” according to NIZM. He can do “classical” JB to canonical songs such as James Brown’s Watergate, and Monorail, and in the same sequence do a variation of the same style to house music hip-hop or funk. Teaching comes natural to NIZM as his goal when teaching is to make those he teaches better than him. His perspective of JB skating is demonstrated in conversation as well as execution in that there is a reverence for the history, while looking to respectfully innovate and derive new approaches and forms to the style.

Away from Skating, NIZM runs a photography practice and business development consulting firm, and is an avid traveler, foodie, hip-hop fan, and lover of jazz.
