About Kurt Weiss……
The music career of trumpet player Kurt Weiss has taken him to over 40 countries around the globe. This has included extensive tours with the orchestras of Ray Charles (1993‐1995), Artie Shaw (1991‐1992), and Glenn Miller (1989-2001).
During his residency in New York City (1989‐2001), he also performed with the orchestras of Maria Schneider, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Mario Bouza, Barry Harris, Dave Burger, Jimmy Dorsey and the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Weiss has also performed with various artists such as Aretha Franklin, Nancy Sinatra, The Gypsy Kings, Natalie Cole, Donna Summer, Rosemary Clooney, Mel Tormé and Steve Grossman.
Originally from Delaware, Kurt Weiss has been living and teaching in
the Netherlands since 2001 and is currently professor of trumpet, jazz theory and
arranging at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen. He has also given
numerous clinics around the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Finland, Italy and
Spain.
During his tenure in Holland, Kurt has been the conductor of the Utrecht’s Jazz
Orchestra (2005‐2007), Stage Band Groningen (2011‐present), West Coast Big Band
(2006‐present), and the Northern European Jazz Orchestra (2011‐present). As conductor, Weiss has lead these big bands to win the top prize 4 different times
at various jazz festival competitions throughout the Netherlands. He was also awarded a soloist prize for his conducting at the Hoofddorp Meer Jazz Festival (2011). Kurt is the first conductor ever to win this prize in it’s 18 year history.
About Harry vd Laan
Harry van der Laan plays tenor saxophone with a full muscular broad
sound. He studied at the conservatories of Groningen and Amsterdam
and works mainly as a performing musician. He plays in the Noordpool
Orkest, the North European Jazz Orchestra and the Stage Band Jazz Orchestra.
He is also a welcome soloist in smaller ensembles. He is a fan of
the music of Hank Mobley
