Immerse yourself in the smooth sounds of Portland's local jazz scene with a special night featuring two captivating bands: "Special Purpose" and "Happy 4 No Reason." These homegrown talents promise to deliver an evening of pure musical delight at our intimate venue.
Happy 4 No Reason
Jo Alexis is a songwriter, producer and vocalist for over 150 songs for her many projects including Alexis/Alexander, Happy For No Reason and her latest, GALEXI. Often compared to Sinead O’Connor & Bjork, she brings great hooks to enchanting melodies and her vocals leave the listener wanting more.
Her jazz/folk trio, , is releasing their second CD, “Take It Higher” co-produced by Alisdair Lee and Grammy-award winning engineer, Sean Flora. If you are a fan of Sara Bareilles or Joni Mitchell’s Hejira, you will love this music. Composed of singer/songwriter Jo Alexis on vocals and percussion, Neil Goldstein on guitar, and Mark Pritchard on flute, the members of H4NR cook up jazzy folk with a pinch of rock and a dash of soul.
Special Purpose
Special Purpose has what Vallis describes as “an updated vintage vibe. Jazz has evolved over the years, but the 1970s in the musical reference point for what I’m doing.” The current lineup features Melissa Carroll on saxophone, Tommy Houston on keyboards, Joshua Slamp on bass, and Juan Felipe BZ on drums. (And for the record: The name Special Purpose isn’t a reference to anything specific...especially not Steve Martin’s The Jerk.)
