About this Event

We're hosting live jazz every week to help keep away those Sunday scaries.

This event if free to all! We hope to see you every Sunday afteroon! Each week a different artist will perform as we try to make up for all the lost live musical performances.

This week will be The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol.

About The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol:

The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol is one of the premiere vocalists of her time. Her unique style and gift of connecting with her audience is astonishing. Arranging jazz standards and other popular songs in her own way, is nothing new to Miss Faye. She began this decades ago, well before mixing genres such as hip-hop & jazz were so widely embraced. This Bay Area living legend remains true to her Mississippi roots infusing the blues into everything from Cole Porter to Michel Legrand songs. She began singing while still a young girl in Meridian where her grandmother recognized her gift & kept her involved in school & church events. After relocating to Pittsburg, CA she became immersed in gospel music, touring nationally with The Angelaires. Miss Faye made her name singing with Oakland blues and funk legend Johnny Talbot & De Thangs on Oakland’s innovative 1960s funk scene before forming her own trio and gaining fame in San Francisco's jazz, blues, and cabaret clubs of the 1970s and 80s.

The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol & Her Trio was formed in the 1970s. Heavily influenced by contemporaries Betty Carter & Aretha Franklin, Miss Faye began to cultivate an audience that remains diverse as her uplifting music. She’s also maintained a high level of musicianship in her group, grooming young aspiring musicians like pianist Benny Green, bassist/composer Marcus Shelby, saxophonist/composer Howard Wiley, and her daughter, pianist/rapper/vocalist/compser Kito Kamili. Her vocal proteges include international superstars Kehlani and Ledisi.

Miss Faye continues to lead her group, as well as collaborate with other artists. She has shared the stage with Marvin Gaye, Charles Brown, Marcus Shelby Orchestra, David Murray, Gene Ammons, Ray Charles, Billy Higgins, Steve Turre, Albert King, Bobby Hutcherson, Joan Baez, Pharaoh Sanders, Philly Joe Jones, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson, Marvin ‘Smitty’ Smith, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Tootie Heath, Ledisi, Marc Cary, Cedar Walton, Dorothy Donegan, Chester Thompson, Oakland Symphony, Gary Bartz, Mistah F.A.B., Pete Escovedo, Henry Butler, Azar Lawrence, Buster Williams, and Ben Vereen.

She has been honored with the proclamation ion of a city-wide “Faye Carol Day” in the City of Berkeley and inducted into the Oakland Walk of Fame, the Meridian Mississippi Walk of Fame, and the Pittsburg Entertainment and Arts Hall of Fame, and has received countless awards including Bay Area Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Hero Award, KPFA BAJABA Lifetime Achievement Award, City of Berkeley Lifetime Achievement Award, Jefferson Award for Public Service, East Bay Express Best of the East Bay, Best Singer or MC, BGLT People in Pride Sylvester Music Heritage Award, four Cabaret Gold Awards, and Top Star Awards Entertainer of the Year and Best Vocalist.
