As a leading voice in modern jazz piano, Marc Cary’s work with Jackie McLean, Art Taylor, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, and Roy Hargrove helped shape the genre. In this workshop, Cary will share theoretical knowledge and practical applications of 8-note scales, sometimes called ‘bebop scales.’ He will detail approaches to improvising over American songbook standards using two scales, providing attendees with tangible skills they can immediately apply. Additional topics include creativity and rhythm, essential elements for any aspiring musician.Prerequisites: intermediate music theory knowledge and some familiarity with jazz improvisation.

About Marc Cary
Marc Cary stands out as one of New York’s top jazz pianists. Raised between Providence, RI, and Washington, DC, he hails from a musically literate family, with his mother a cellist and his great-grandmother a stride pianist. Cary is a graduate of DC’s Duke Ellington School for the Arts, where he collaborated with notable artists like Meshell Ndegeocello. Moving to New York at 21, he played with jazz legends including Dizzy Gillespie and Carmen McRae. Cary’s debut recording was released in 1995, and he has since produced numerous albums, earning accolades such as the DownBeat Critics Poll ‘Rising Star – Keyboardist’. He is known for blending electronic textures with jazz improvisation, a skill honed from his early interest in electronics. Cary also leads jazz improvisation classes at the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School, maintaining his position as a significant influence in contemporary jazz.
