JAZZ FUSION NIGHT 3 - "JAZZ FUNK REVIVAL" BY EDGE OF BREAKUP BAND
- 8.30PM SUNDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 2025 -
Edge of Breakup take their inspiration for the jazz funk music of the late 1960s when people like Eddie Harris and Grant Green turned away from playing bebop and standards to playing blues drenched deep funk with soulful one chord vamps and hypnotic beats. This music originated in the protest movements in the US in the mid 60s when equal rights were the focus of activists like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.
Jazz musicians started to explore and rediscover their roots back to the repetitive vamps of the blues and blues shouts from the cotton fields and beyond back to Africa. Suddenly jazz got funky.
Edge of Breakup borrows from that tradition and also draws inspiration from more recent players like guitarist John Scofield who carries on the funky jazz tradition. They’ll play songs such as I’ll Take Les, Do Like Eddy, Chitlins Con Carne and Hottentot to keep your feet tapping and your soul grooving.
𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐝 - 𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐫𝐞:
𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐙𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 - 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐬
Paul, from the UK, has been involved in Vietnamese jazz for a long time and currently works with the Jazz Department on a small jazz student scholarship programme every year. He also plays in Hanoi based band, All That Mojo. Coming from the blues tradition, Paul lays down deep, funky bass lines that weave together with the drums and percussion to create unstoppable grooves that create a boogaloo flavour and make you want to dance.
Đ𝐨̂̃ 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐡 𝐇𝐚̉𝐢 - 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫
A recent graduate of the Vietnam Jazz Department, Hải plays jazz funk with a deep blues tradition but is also able to create swinging jazz lines that draw from modern and more traditional guitar forms effortlessly with his fluid technique. He was a jazz Scholarship winner in 2024.
𝐋𝐮̛𝐨̛𝐧𝐠 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐡 - 𝐃𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐬
Vinh is a young rising star of the drums in Vietnam and not just in jazz. Like Hải he has the chops and flexibility to play in different styles but he always comes back to jazz of which he is a student at the Jazz Department. Vinh brings youthful energy and driving grooves to Edge of Breakup helping define their sound.
𝐍𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐞̂̃𝐧 𝐍𝐠𝐨̣𝐜 𝐀́𝐧𝐡 𝐃𝐮̛𝐨̛𝐧𝐠 - 𝐊𝐞𝐲𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬
Dương is equally at home playing Jimmy Smith Hammond organ lines as she is playing lyrical phrases of pianists like Bill Evans. Providing that iconic Hammond Organ sound, Dương lays down the deep backbone to lots of the grooves of Edge of Breakup. She’s a student at the Jazz Department and will graduate next year.
𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐡 - 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧
Souhail is a percussion legend in Hanoi. Hailing from Morocco he has played in so many bands he’s lost count. His deep musicianship is always in high demand as he creates percussion soundscapes that can captivate and hypnotise audiences into a sense of elation.

Edge of Breakup – một nhóm nhạc trẻ trung, mạnh mẽ đang thắp lại ngọn lửa jazz funk rực cháy từ cuối thập niên 1960s. Lấy cảm hứng từ những huyền thoại như Eddie Harris và Grant Green, ban nhạc đưa người nghe trở về thời điểm khi các nghệ sĩ jazz rời xa bebop và các bản tiêu chuẩn để hòa mình vào những giai điệu funk đậm chất blues, những đoạn vamp một hợp âm lặp đi lặp lại đầy mê hoặc, và các nhịp điệu cuốn hút khó cưỡng.
Dòng nhạc này ra đời trong giai đoạn cao trào của phong trào đòi quyền dân chủ tại Mỹ, khi các nghệ sĩ tìm về nguồn cội của mình, khám phá lại sức mạnh của sự giản dị, tính ngẫu hứng, và nhịp điệu mạnh.
Edge of Breakup kế thừa tinh thần đó và đồng thời lấy cảm hứng từ những nghệ sĩ đương đại nối tiếp, tiếp tục giữ cho ngọn lửa funk luôn cháy bỏng.
