Institute Library regulars know that every Friday evening, hepcats and hepkittens, young and old, convene up on the third floor in the Music Suite (usually) to listen to some sides and have a fine old time... On January 9th, the focus will be the I Want to Live! movie soundtrack, a jazz classic -- and as a special treat, we will be screening the movie right after the music ends. Join us in the Biography Room to watch the classic, award-nominated up the wazoo flick.
This 1958 movie's pedigree is unreal and you might have forgotten about it. The soundtrack's composer was Johnny Mandel; the music was performed by Gerry Mulligan and Art Farmer. Directed by Robert Wise, starring Susan Hayward, Theodore Bikel, Simon Oakland, and Virginia Vincent, and featuring others whose faces you'll totally recognize (Gavin MacLeod! Jack Weston!) this movie about sex, drugs, crime, punishment -- the seamy underbelly of American life in the 1950s -- is a stone cold classic, with a soundtrack by Gerry Mulligan. It's based on a true story. But don't expect a documentary-type of scene. This is a fictionalized account of Barbara Graham's story, but it'll stick in your craw for a while, we pretty much guarantee.
This screening is free and open to the public, as is Friday Night Jazz, but we ardently hope folks coming will make a $5 or $10 donation to the Institute Library to cover costs associated with this enterprise.
