Suzzette Ortiz, a passionate pianist, composer, choral conductor, and educator has been serving her communities with the gift of music from her humble beginnings in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, to her many recent successes as a Pennsauken, NJ resident.
She earned an undergraduate degree in piano performance at the Music Conservatory of Puerto Rico and has studied piano with Cesar “Pupi” Pedroso (of the world-famous Cuban group, Los Van Van) and Elio Villafranca, Orlando Fiol, Sumi Tonooka, and the late Philadelphia jazz phenom, Jimmy Amadie.
Ortiz, who has been laboring in the trenches for the past two decades, took it upon herself to record her own music. The Puerto Rican-born pianist came to Philly to study music, and racked up some heavy-duty credentials along the way.
She studied choral conducting at Julliard and Temple, took an apprenticeship in piano with the legendary César "Pupy" Pedroso , of Los Van Van fame, and studied vocal improvisation with Bobby McFerrin. During this period, Ortiz took a day gig with the Camden Schools and managed to produce a chorale which has won awards all over the world. In the evenings Ortiz performed with the seminal female Latin-jazz group Ellas, and even garnered four Latin Grammy nominations with Philadelphia salsa group Orquesta La Paz.
As a performer Suzzette has shared the stage with artists such as, Tito Puente, Nestor Torres, Eddie Palmieri, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Compay Segundo. Suzzette has also performed in such venues as the Philadelphia Clef Club, the Kimmel Center, The Mann Music Center, Baby Grand Concert Hall, the original Zanzibar Blue Jazz Club, and El Flamingo Night club in Manhattan, NYC.
Jazz Bridge, an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to assisting Greater Philadelphia Metro area jazz and blues musicians and vocalists in times of crisis, sponsors these neighborhood concerts throughout the region to keep the sound of Philadelphia alive.
