About this Event

DC Jazz Festival and The Corner at Whitman-Walker co-present, Jazz at the Corner, a concert series presenting jazz ensembles in performance, part of Stay Alive to Life, an exhibition and program of events, on resilience in times of COVID-19, organized in cooperation with Kadist, The Museum of Dreams, and Goethe Institute.

Curated by DCJF Artistic Director, Willard Jenkins, the series features jazz artists from the LGBTQI+ community. A pre-concert Meet the Artist conversation will take place prior to each concert.

“DC Jazz Festival is delighted to partner with The Corner at Whitman Walker to bring jazz to this vibrant cultural center, said DCJF Executive Director Sunny Sumter. “The Corner’s dedication to bringing different ideas of culture and diverse communities in contact with one another aligns with our mission of unifying diverse communities and enable connections between artists and audiences.”

These performances will be attended in-person with a capacity of 15 guests, with all shows adhering to the latest health and safety guidelines laid out by the DC Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention listed here.

May 13th

Artist Name: Chris Grasso Quartet

Chris Grasso is firmly established as the DMV’s finest vocal accompanist. After studying at the University of Michigan and Peabody Conservatory, Chris has worked with a wide range of artists, including Keter Betts, Carmen Bradford, Kenny Garrett, Nicole Henry, Joshua Redman, Cassandra Wilson, Buck Hill, and others. Chris is a longtime accompanist-music director to DC’s premier jazz vocalist Sharon Clark, with whom Grasso has performed at a wide range of venues, from Blues Alley to the Metropolitan Room in New York. Additionally, Chris has appeared as a guest soloist with the University of Michigan Philharmonic and the Syracuse Symphony.

May 20th

Artist Name: Steve Washington & Friends

A 30-year performer, Steve has worked as an actor on stages ranging from the Arena Stage to the Shakespeare Theater. As a vocalist, Steve has performed alongside the Drifters, the Supremes, and others. As a freelance vocalist, Washington has performed on numerous jazz and blues stages, including sold-out performances at Blues Alley and at the Metropolitan Room in New York. Steve Washington studied at Princeton University.

May 27th

Artist Name: Joshua Espinoza Trio

A pianist-composer, Joshua Espinoza seeks to inhabit the space between jazz and classical music - Debussy, Chopin, and Ravel to Bill Evans, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett. Joshua has performed alongside such notables as Warren Wolf, Miho Hazama, Kris Funn, Todd Marcus, and Chuck Redd. Espinoza has performed on stages large and small, from the Kennedy Center and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival to Blues Alley and the Keystone Korner. Joshua is currently on the music faculty at the Peabody Institute. Espinoza matriculated at Indiana University and Furman University.

June 3rd

Artist Name: The Simone Baron Group

Raised in Italy and Washington, DC, pianist-composer-accordionist Simone Baron aims to perform in a range from “the familiar to the avant-garde.” In that vein, Simone has performed on stages across Europe, Israel, and the Americas. Simone is a recipient of grants from Chamber Music America, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Simone studied at Oberlin Conservatory and Tel Aviv University.

June 10th

Artist Name: Landon Paddock Group

A vocalist, Landon was born and raised in Prince George’s County, MD. Landon specializes in blues, straight ahead jazz, and is an explorer of the Great American Songbook in the tradition of Frank Sinatra and Johnny Hartman to Michael Buble and Harry Connick, Jr. Landon’s musical influences range from Ella Fitzgerald to John Coltrane. Landon has appeared on weekly gigs at Columbia Station, as well as JoJo, Sotto, and the Fig & Olive.

June 17th

Artist Name: C. Corey Bey Black Folks Don't Swim?

C. Corey-Bey (They/Them/Theirs) is a brilliant Black, trans and gender-variant native of Prince George’s County. Perhaps best known for their work band-leading and performing with jazz funk-soul outfit, Black Folks Don’t Swim? They are an acclaimed bassist and producer. Their solo artistic practice additionally spans poetry, graphic design, and filmmaking. Their work calls audiences to joy, reflection, and liberation-mindedness. Across mediums, their work explores the nexus of meaning-making, employing Jazz and Neo-Soul aesthetics to uplift Black Queer identity formation and existence.

June 24th

Artist Name: J Chris Quartet

J Chris (aka Chris Urquiaga) is a singer-songwriter-producer who served an artist residency at Strathmore Music Hall. Chris is the recipient of the Montgomery County Hispanic Heritage Month Award. Chris studied at the famed Eastman School of Music and has performed on stages ranging from the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica in Lima, Peru, to the Obama administration White House.
