The Communist Party organised a huge demonstration outside Middlesbrough Town Hall on Sunday 10th February 1935 against Oswald Mosely, the leader of the British Union of Fascists who was speaking inside. The demonstration passed off peacefully. Thirty two Teesside men volunteered to defend democracy and served in the International Brigade in Spain, of whom ten lost their lives. Thirteen men at the 1935 demonstration would later serve in the International Brigade in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Ten Teesside volunteers who lost their lives defending democracy in Spain are commemorated on the Teesside International Brigade memorial ( https://foxburg.edublogs.org/2021/02/22/teesside-ib-memorial/) which in inside Middlesbrough Town Hall.
Five Teesside volunteers lost their lives at the Battle of Jarama in February 1937, this was the first engagement for the British Battalion of the XV International Brigade. We will commemorate the demonstration against the British Union of Fascists and remember the volunteers who lost their lives at Jarama, defending Spain from a Fascist invasion.
We will meet at the MIMA car park (102 Grange Rd, Middlesbrough TS1 2BH) and process to Middlesbrough Town Hall where we will be hold a short commemoration.
After the commemoration we will retire to The Chapel (16 Whitehouse St, Middlesbrough TS5 4BY) for light refreshments and a chat.
