See GCU’s beautiful Japanese Garden and authentic traditional teahouse, which was exhibited at the Japan-British Exhibition of 1910. The Japanese Garden is one of the historic and natural gems of the campus, having been installed by the Gould family and designed in 1910 by celebrated Japanese-born landscape architect Takeo Shiota.
The program will start in the Mansion at 3 pm with an introductory powerpoint program on the teahouse. This is followed by a short walk (about 800 feet) over to the Japanese Garden, which is next to Maria Hall, to learn about the elements of the garden landscape from Dr. Michael Gross and about the interior of the teahouse and how it looks set up for tea from Judith Krall-Russo, an expert in the centuries-old Japanese tea ceremony tradition. Dr. Sachiko Komagata will explain traditional Japanese dress and culture back in the Mansion. The program will conclude in the Mansion with Ms. Krall-Russo conducting a tea ceremony featuring traditional Japanese tea (matcha) and sweets for you to sample. In the event of heavy rain, the entire event will be held in the Mansion. The event will conclude between 4:30pm and 5:00pm.
