🇯🇵 📄🎞️ Presented by the Australian Cinémathèque in association with the Art Gallery of New South Wales and ACMI, in partnership with The Japan Foundation, Sydney as part of the Japanese Film Festival 2025, this event showcases the fascinating world of Japanese paper films. In the 1930s, Japanese companies produced a unique paper-based film stock with its own distinct texture and properties. While most of these prints have now been lost to wartime damage and deterioration, the Japanese Paper Films projected – based out Bucknell University, Pennsylvania – has led the charge to find, digitise and restore what remains.
This event will feature a multimedia talk about the history of the medium by Professor Eric Faden of Bucknell University, followed by an hour-long curated screening of short ‘paper films.’ The screening will feature live musical accompaniment from the New York-based Duo Yumeno (Yoko Reikano Kimura and Hikaru Tamaki), who will accompany select works on the koto and cello.
