East of the Taipei city walls Qidong street was once a hub of activity as coal, rice and agricultural products were transported along the river to Songshan and then brought to the East Gate close to this neighborhood. There were a lot of Japanese-style wooden houses built here and while many were demolished, some can still be explored.
