Discover the Beauty of Japanese Calligraphy with Mika Kobayashi!
Join us for a beginner's Japanese calligraphy workshop where you’ll learn about the unique art form of Shodō, using a brush and charcoal ink on washi paper. This in-person workshop is perfect for beginners who want to try their hand at Japanese calligraphy. No prior language experience is necessary!
Mika Kobayashi is a trained Japanese calligrapher from Tokyo, Japan, who has been practicing this art form since the age of 6. Her work has been exhibited in various venues, including the National Art Center in Tokyo. After moving to Berlin, Mika was struck by the uniqueness of Japanese culture and noticed a great curiosity in the west to learn more about it. She decided to share her passion for Japanese culture with a diverse international community and explore it together.
In this workshop, you will:
- Learn about the history of calligraphy
- Understand the tools used for calligraphy
- Experience "mushin" or “no mind” through short meditation exercises
- Practice the eight essential brush strokes needed for calligraphy
- Write the Chinese character "ei," which means eternity and contains all eight brush strokes
- Try seisho, which is clear-minded calligraphy, and finish one work using everything you learned
The goal of the workshop is not to write beautiful characters but to discover inner peace and harmony within oneself. The workshop ends with an open discussion to hear participants' thoughts and impressions throughout the session.
Supplies will be provided, so all you have to do is bring your enthusiasm and creativity. Workshop will be conducted in English with some Japanese word facts ;)
