This 8-week course will be perfect for those who want to study deeper than what is provided in the Workshop and improve both your writing skills and the balance between mind and body.
During eight weeks, we will go over the basics of Japanese calligraphy, including:
● Four treasures of calligraphy tools (brush, ink, paper & ink stone case)
● Meditation practice while making sumi-ink
● How to hold the brush and control big & small brushes
● Eight fundamental brush strokes for formal regular script, "Kaisho" style
● How to write kanji and hiragana (Japanese alphabets)
● Practice and create your own calligraphy artwork
● Experience both traditional and modern calligraphy writing
● Sumi-e Japanese painting (Bamboo)
● Write with a big calligraphy brush to create a self-expressive art
*Everybody is welcome – no prior art experience or Japanese language skills are necessary!
*Students will be required to bring their own equipment. In the case that students do not own equipment, basic calligraphy kits can be purchased from Kisyuu at cost.

Week 2 : (Sumi ink) Horizontal Line & Vertical Line
Week 3 : (Incense) Long Tails – Left & Right
Week 4 : (Three Important Elements in Calligraphy) Dots & Big Brush Challenge - Write with a big brush on a big calligraphy paper!
Week 5 : (Name Stamp) Name Writing, Small Brush Challenge & Sumi-e painting
Week 6 : (Calligraphy paper) Review & Eiji Happo
Week 7 : (History of Hiragana) Hiragana (Japanese Alphabet)
Week 8 : (Modern Style of Calligraphy) Create Your Own Calligraphy Art
