About this Event
Description:
This program is a building tour of 2025 AIA Kentucky People’s Choice Award Logan Street Gallery located at 1131 Logan Street in Louisville’s Shelby Park Neighborhood. The 9,680 GSF, three-story building was originally built in 1879 as the Rupp & Lehfart Drygoods store, one of the earliest corner commercial buildings in the neighborhood. Following a series of mid-to-late 20th century office conversions that stripped much of its historic character, the building underwent a full renovation in 2022-2023 aimed at both preservation and activation. The project restored the building’s original storefront, revealed and preserved historic architectural details, and reimagined the space for contemporary use.
Today, the ground floor houses a vibrant art gallery for a prominent local collector, displaying a collection spanning local and international artists. The upper levels provide light-filled office spaces for several local small businesses. A spacious courtyard at the rear of the building serves as a community gathering space, frequently hosting neighborhood events and fostering local engagement. The project was designed to achieve historic tax credits, aligning with a broader effort to honor the building’s legacy and location within the community.
The presenter will discuss various goals and objectives outlined during the design phase and how those were carried out through the construction process. Participants will be able to walk through each of the different gallery, community, and special function spaces on the interior as well as around the exterior of the building.
