The Gilmer County Genealogical Society will hold its February monthly meeting on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the lower level meeting room of the Gilmer County Library. Dennis Stewart, author and First Families of Gilmer County member, will return to Gilmer County to present the program “The Whitaker Family of Gilmer County.”The Whitakers were one of the most interesting families in early Gilmer County, Georgia. Originally Quakers, they migrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania to North Carolina , and then finally to Gilmer County, being seated in the quaint hamlet of Cherry Log.
Research indicates that this Whitaker family line are direct descendants of Edward III King of England. The progenitor of the Gilmer Whitakers was Silas Whitaker (1820-1902) who was a distant cousin to the two wives of Henry VIII who were executed, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. This was a bizarre and interesting twist in the Whitaker family tree.
