"Zoo Animal Welfare Science" by Dr. Meredith Bashaw of F&M University
Accredited zoos aim to provide their animals good physical health and longevity, positive mental and emotional states, and opportunities to develop competence and resilience. How can we understand and evaluate progress towards these goals? Can we reliably infer what animals are experiencing and ask what they want and need? We'll discuss current research aiming to understand and improve the lives of animals living in human care without the benefits of domestication.
Meredith J Bashaw, Professor of Psychology, Franklin & Marshall College. Since 2005, Dr. Bashaw has directed the Exotic Animal Welfare Lab at Franklin & Marshall College. The lab uses behaviour and hormone analyses to understand and improve the welfare of exotic animals in human care. She has studied zoo animals - from giraffes to geckos - for 28 years and recently edited the book Scientific Foundations of Zoos and Aquariums: Their role in conservation and research. In 2025, she received F&M's Lindback Foundation Award to recognize sustained excellence in teaching Research Design & Statistics, Hormones & Behavior, Animal Husbandry, & Animal Welfare.
