Chapter member Patrick Mc Gowan will present " Caught in a Jam: Repatriating Americans from Europe at the Start of WWII”.An estimated 100,000 American citizens were caught in Europe at the start of WWII. Efforts to get them home were complicated by political attitudes in the U.S. and Ireland as well as naval events in the North Atlantic. The travails of one particular liner carrying nearly 600,000 Irish-Americans back to NYC in October, 1939 captured the world's attention and is an important part of the story you will hear.
