This month's challenge: AI in Film
For our monthly challenge, we are inviting filmmakers to experiment with one of the most debated tools in the creative world right now: AI.
This challenge is not so much about generating an entire short film using AI (although you're welcome to if that's how'd you like to integrate it), but there is no requirement to use it in a specific way. Instead, the goal is simple exploration. Use AI however you feel it best serves your story, your process, or even your argument. That could mean AI-generated props, photographs, artwork, logos, documents, voices, concepts, or visual elements that become part of the narrative. It could also mean using AI in pre-production, worldbuilding, or design rather than on-screen content.
We recognize that AI is controversial, especially in creative spaces, and that tension is part of what makes this challenge interesting. You are welcome to use this opportunity to explore AI as a helpful tool, to interrogate its limitations, to critique it, to reject it, or even to prove that it has no place in filmmaking at all. Any of those approaches are valid, as long as they are done with intent. AI is becoming increasingly integrated into everyday life and creative workflows. This challenge is an opportunity to approach that reality thoughtfully, critically, and creatively. Anyone is welcome to submit. As always, originality, storytelling, and intention matter more than polish. We are excited to see how each of you chooses to approach this from your own perspective.
Please send all submissions to the new official SEFM email: [email protected] or feel free to send a link to Terrence Williams, Ben Reyes, or Amy Widmer. You're also welcome to bring it on a USB drive if necessary 😊
