Join NBCBC for our free monthly meetup! Discuss creative ideas in a comfortable setting amongst local makers and shakers. The topic this month is ARTIST MANIFESTOS!An artist manifesto is a public declaration of an artist's or artistic group's goals, views, and intentions. Manifestos are a key feature of modernist avant-garde movements and are still written today. They are often intended to shock or inspire, and can address broader issues like politics.
Here are some characteristics of artist manifestos:
Purpose
Manifestos are meant to persuade and convert readers. They can define and criticize a contemporary art or culture paradigm, and then define a set of aesthetic values to counter it.
Themes
Common themes include the need for freedom of expression, revolution, and the superiority of the writers over the status quo.
History
Manifestos have been written since at least 1886, but the genre became more prominent after the publication of F.T. Marinetti's Futurist manifesto in 1909.
Manifestos serve as a way for artists or groups of artists to directly communicate what their main objective is. Sometimes the object I've is to restrict artists with aesthetic rules, sometimes it's to define the difference between the in group and the out group. Other times it is used as a sarcastic way to poke fun at an institutions or as motivation or inspiration.
