James finally fulfilled his long ambition to write fiction in the 1990s after years travelling the world as a correspondent for BBC News.
His many novels include Ferney and its sequel The Lives She Left Behind - both set in Penselwood, close to Mere.
His new novel, The Pepys Conspiracy, centres on the extraordinary events which beset Pepys and his dead wife’s brother, Balty St.Michel in 1679, it was hatched from years of research and a growing awareness of what may actually have happened to fill the puzzling gaps in the real story.
