Jazz Series / Live at Timucua: Tenor and alto saxophone player Jeff Rupert will be joining pianist James Hall, bassist Doug Mathews, and drummer Jamesly Jean-Mary for an afternoon of small-group live jazz. Rupert, a UCF professor and leader of the university’s big band, brings expertise in ballads, bossa nova, and straight-ahead jazz. Among the wide array of musicians he has recorded with are Maynard Ferguson, Sam Rivers, Mel Torme, and Benny Carter.
James Hall, an intern at the Timucua and rising junior at Rollins College, is a jazz pianist and vibraphone player who recorded his first trio album, Hall Aboard, in 2022. He has brought guest saxophonists and trumpet players to his group’s concert series in New Smyrna Beach and to the New Smyrna Beach Jazz Festival to play his style of lively, entertaining jazz - Mainstream Modern.
Bassist Doug Mathews is a former member of Sam Rivers’ Trio and a current member of the Rejuvenation Orchestra who brings expertise from both avant-garde and straight-ahead jazz groups. Jamesly Jean-Mary is a graduate of UCF and member of Rupert’s Flying Horse Big Band. The group just released the album A Message featuring UCF students and alumni, including Jean-Mary on drums.
