Jonkanoo is a traditional performance art form, laced with resistance, that was developed by enslaved Africans on the sugar plantations of Jamaica in the1700's . They created characters wearing costumes of resistance, composed music, added movement and pantomime, often in white face masks, then presented masquerades that temporarily relieve the inhumanity of slavery, while mocking their European masters. This workshop in Leimert Park Village explores some of the dance, pantomime and characteristic movements of the tradition.
