More on Jacques:
The Gauteng-based musician grew up in Johannesburg and studied art and drama before relocating to London in 1998. It was after his return to SA in the early 2000s that he decided to step into the arena of music-making. Improvising tunes on his grandmother’s piano since the age of five, whilst embracing the emotional effect that melodies had on him as a child, Moolman felt the music in his head from a very young age.
Today, Moolman chooses the guitar as his main means of musical expression, but can also play bass, piano and drums, having been
influenced from a young age by his father’s love for jazz, blues and a vast range of musical styles.
Influenced by singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Iggy Pop, Jack White, Radiohead, Nirvana, Aretha Franklin and The Beatles to name a few, Moolman relates to the rawness of the blues as well as bands from the ‘60s like The Doors and The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
More on The Great Valley Redemption:
“I came back to South Africa in 2001 (from living between London and The Isle of Wight) and I moved in with my father who was living in Groot Marico in the North West, which is a fairly isolated place. I had this urge to get out of there and get back to the city because I’d started writing music and I wanted to get to a stage and perform. It was a very tumultuous and difficult time for me, being young and needing to get out and do my thing as a musician. But Marico has this great energy - it’s a tough place so it toughened me but I’ve always gone back to write music there,” Jacques explains when questioned about the album’s title.
Tapping into parts of his past that are very personal, Jacques created an autobiographical album that looks back, but also recognises the new phase that he’s currently in. So, by coming to terms with the concept of his “redemption”, he’s left the past behind and moved forward with his life.
