After wowing audiences as part of Béla Fleck’s touring band in 2022,mandolinist Jacob Jolliff will be coming to Monterey on Tuesday, July 9th
with his own band in tow as a featured part of Otter Opry’s 2024 concert
season. Here’s what Béla Fleck had to say about this remarkable young
musician: “Jacob is a serious player. Considering his strong musical
concept, formidable technical abilities, and a powerful work ethic, he is a
mandolinist to watch.”
A former member of two massively popular progressive bluegrass bands,
Joy Kills Sorrow and the Yonder Mountain String Band, Jolliff is one of the
country’s premier contemporary mandolinists. He attended Berklee School
of Music on a full scholarship, and he won the National Mandolin
Championship in Winfield, KS in 2012. A fixture in the national bluegrass
community, he has collaborated and shared the stage with Darol Anger,
Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Michael Daves, Tony Trischka, and David
Grisman, to name just a few.
Now in 2024, the mandolinist’s primary focus is the Jacob Jolliff Band, a
group of virtuosic pickers that play Jacob’s original instrumentals and
showcase his singing. The group has released two albums: “Instrumentals
Vol. 1” in 2018 and “The Jacob Jolliff Band” in 2022. In addition to Jacob
himself, the band features Myles Sloniker on bass, Ross Martin on guitar,
and George Jackson on fiddle. This will definitely be a concert to write
home about, so get your tickets now. The event includes a public jam
starting at 4:00pm and a delicious dinner at 5:30pm ($12.50 before July
6th, $17.50 at the door). Online ticket sales will end at noon the day of the
performance.
