Connie Allenbury the Richest Girl in the World (Loy) is fed up with being maligned in the press, and sues a newspaper for a cool $5 million. Naturally, the reporter who made the mistake (Tracy) will go to any length to get his paper off the hook. High style, MGM gloss with its sparkling stars is expected, but Libeled Lady is unexpectedly rowdy, with an extended laugh-inducing fishing interlude, one of the great slapstick sequences of the decade. All the stars are top notch, but Myrna Loy’s performance as an aggrieved playgirl is unexpectedly delicate and emotional.
