Bristol trio Jabu return with A Soft and Gatherable Star, released via their own label Do You Have Peace?, the album is an atmospheric masterpiece, perfect for small-hours listening. A hazy, heart-wrenching fusion ofdreampop, dub, and ambient folk. With a career arc unlike almost any other current guitar outfit, Jabu sit within a strong lineage of off-centre Bristolian music, and a very British strain of home-spun DIY bands. The band evolves
from a uniquely spectral take on hip hop to proffer a singular vision between cloudy, downered dream-pop, off-kilter ambient, and the warm, low-end throb of sound system culture. In their latest offer, Amos Childs, Alex Rendall, and Jasmine Butt craft an ethereal, nocturnal atmosphere with shimmering guitars, cavernous bass, and intimate vocals. The album channels insomnia and inebriation into 10 tracks brimming with longing, fragmented memories and psychotropic experiences. The songs slip between reality and reverie, often feeling like whispered, illicit conversations.
β...a heady blend of vintage dreampop in the vein of Cocteau Twins and downbeat sound system dub a la AR Kane. The abundance of spectral nostalgia makes for an intoxicating listening experience, while clever contemporary touches sewn into the production details (courtesy of bassist/producer Amos Childs) keep the music tethered to the present.β Leah Kardos, The Wire
βIt's phosphorescent from beginning to end, and one of the best full-lengths we've heard this year.β Boomkat
