In an intense and musical dramatization, J O B – A Simple Man tells the story of an emigrant’s journey from the old world-a little village in Russia-to the new world in New York. Mendel Singer, much like Job in the Hebrew Bible, loses everything. He despairs and curses, but ultimately experiences a miracle. Adapted by Karen-Maria Bille from Joseph Roth’s 1930 novel of the same name, this powerful production stars award-winning Danish actor Ina-Miriam Rosenbaum in every role. Rosenbaum is directed by Rolf Heim and joined onstage by principal oboist of the Danish Royal Orchestra Henrik Goldshmidt and Indian-Danish accordion virtuoso Anders Singh Vesterdahl.
As audiences follow Mendel Singer from joy to deep despair, and through to hope and comfort, the performance’s offbeat music lifts the story of one person into a universally relatable tale about the experience of being a refugee and the challenges of encountering a new world.
Join the Museum of Jewish Heritage for a series of two evening performances of this stirring production on Wednesday, June 1 and Thursday, June 2 at 7 PM ET. Night 2—June 2—will also livestream.
