Takashi Miike’s AUDITION: 25th Anniversary!
(R, 1999, 115 min)
One of the most infamous, impactful, and gut-wrenching Japanese horror films ever made! A recent widower is looking for a new wife. But instead of going the usual route, he decides to hold “auditions” for a movie that doesn’t exist. He quickly becomes enchanted with a spooky twenty-something who is responsive to his charms. But things aren’t what they seem. Restoration courtesy of Arrow Films and the American Genre Film Archive.

TRAILER:

Nobuhiko Obayashi’s HAUSU (HOUSE)
(R, 1977, 88 min)
How to describe House (Hausu)? This is gonzo and hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects.

TRAILER:

Michio Yamamoto’s LAKE OF DRACULA
(1971, 82 min)
A young girl has a terrifying nightmare about a vampire with blazing golden eyes. Years later the dream is revealed to be a hellish prophecy when a strange package containing an empty coffin mysteriously turns up at a nearby lake. But nightmares bleed into reality as Akiko comes face-to-face with bloody fangs, shady maniacs, and her darkest fears. This is a dream-like melding of Mario Bava’s “Bay of Blood” and Hammer’s “Taste the Blood of Dracula”. This is the second film in Yamamoto’s “Bloodthirsty Trilogy” that began with “The Vampire Doll”.

TRAILER:

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s PULSE
(R, 2001, 119 min)
Two young women discover something strange is happening to their friends, who begin committing suicide after leaving cryptic notes asking for help. The women discover that the spirit world has found a way to infect the real world through internet connections. It's like a computer virus, but one that also takes over the minds of real people. And, like any virus, the mysterious force begins to proliferate exponentially, claiming more and more lives every day.

TRAILER:

Kenji Misumi and Robert Houston’s SHOGUN ASSASSIN
(R, 1980, 90 min)
The legendary midnight movie sensation that firmly embedded samurai mythology within American pop culture consciousness! Following the murder of his wife at the hands of an evil shogun, an avenging ronin (Tomisaburo Wakayama) roams the countryside with his young son—and the boy’s sword-shooting baby carriage—in tow, dispatching ninja assassins with steely resolve in operatically stylized flurries of hallucinatory violence. “Shogun Assassin” proved an instant cult favorite that has bubbled its way up from the underground to the mainstream thanks to its influence on artists ranging from the Wu-Tang Clan to Quentin Tarantino.

Yeon Sang-ho’s TRAIN TO BUSAN
(R, 2016, 118 min)

TRAILER:

Disclaimer: Technically, "Train to Busan" is a South Korean zombie picture and not Japanese, but thematically it fits within the Series, and we’re asking everyone to please give us some wiggle room to include “Busan” because, unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of genuine J-Horror movies available with theatrical rights in the United States, and we really wanted to bring this one back to the big screen for those who've only ever seen it on TV.
Ryuhei Kitamura’s VERSUS
(R, 2000, 119 min)
The turn of the millennium brought a barrage of innovative horror, action, and horror-action movies from Japan to the rest of the world -- and none were bloodier or more hyper-kinetic than “Versus”. This relentless sensory assault ties together gory zombie horror, slashing swordplay, gangster shootouts, and shocking fight scenes at the mythic Forest of Resurrection, also known as the 444th portal of the 666 hidden gates linking the earth to the netherworld!
