Spokane songwriter Kevin Brown and his band will be performing at J Bones where he recorded his current release The Morning Haiku.Spokane songwriter Kevin Brown celebrates his 5th album of original songs with a special album release show at J Bones Musicland. The Morning Haiku is the first album released under the band name Kevin Brown & The Beloved Country, as this collection of songs features the strong groove and support of Kevin’s long-time musical collaborators Eugene Jablonsky (bass), Taylor Belote (drums), Duane Becker (pedal steel), Lori Bieberstein (vocals) and Kevin’s son Caleb Brown (sax & vocals). These talented veterans of the Inland Northwest music scene have a collective resume that spans the genre landscape of such popular bands as Super Sparkle, Time Baby, the Kosher Red Hots, the Brent Edstrom Trio, Spokane Jazz Orchestra, Spare Parts, Big Red Barn, Wiley & The Wild West, The Pamela Benton Band and more.
Kevin’s songwriting has received national praise from magazines like No Depression which called his debut album The County Primaries “easily one of the best debut albums of 2010” and his 2015 album Book of Skies “a strong contender for one of the best releases of Americana music by a songwriter this year”. His last album, 2019’s Heroes and Sparrows was #3 on the National Folk Radio Charts.
In addition to the new album (which will be available on both CD and vinyl, as well as on all streaming platforms), Kevin is also releasing a book of haiku poetry under the same title and cover as the album. Advance praise for the book from award-winning author Lesley Poling-Kempes calls it “Awesome, beautiful, witty and wise”. The book contains selections curated from a daily discipline of haiku-writing that Kevin undertook during the Covid pandemic – a writing exercise that ended up spawning the ideas for several songs on the album, including the title track which is entirely written in haiku.
