This year, we celebrate Rembrandt and a Queen with an immersive evening of the Megillah, masterpieces, and mischief. For the first time, the annual I ♥ Purim party takes place in East Building—the original home of the Judaic Art Gallery established in 1984. The party commemorates a monumental collaboration between the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Jewish Museum, New York.Join us for a night where art, identity, and heroism take center stage, inspired by the extraordinary exhibition The Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt. This landmark presentation brings together paintings, prints, and objects that illuminate how 17th-century Dutch artists interpreted the powerful story of Esther—a narrative of courage, hidden identity, and deliverance that resonates across centuries.
*Space is limited; advance tickets are required. Per IRS advisory, no portion of the admission is tax-deductible unless otherwise noted. All proceeds benefit the Judaic Art Fund.
Channel your inner muse—your costume is your canvas. Come dressed in creative attire inspired by the world of art and the story of Esther.
Become a work of art:
Transform yourself into an iconic artwork: the Mona Lisa, Starry Night, Feast of Esther, or even a duct-taped banana.
Embody an artist:
Arrive as Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Rembrandt, or another artistic legend.
Represent an art movement:
Think cubist shapes and colors, dreamy impressionist pastels, bold pop art tones, or the dramatic palette of Dutch Old Masters.
Portray a figure from the Book of Esther:
Queen Esther, Mordecai, King Ahasuerus, or even villainous Haman.
A costume contest features special Art Critics’ Choice awards.
What awaits within the gallery
Art Illuminated: Explore the extraordinary works in The Book of Esther. Wander among paintings, prints, drawings, and ceremonial objects that highlight both Esther’s story and the dynamic cultural role she played in the 17th-century Netherlands.
Light and Shadow Portrait Station: Inspired by Rembrandt’s technique, we offer soft-glow lighting and theatrical backdrops, so you can be photographed in rich contrasts of light and dark, like a figure in a Dutch Golden Age painting.
Feast of the Senses: Enjoy an elegant spread of savory and sweet hors d’oeuvres that feel both refined and celebratory, like a royal banquet across time.
Candlelit Cocktail Lounge: Sip cocktails, wine, or mocktails under warm, low light that recreates the ambiance of a candle-lit gallery or court.
Dance in the Gallery: Move through the space on a dance floor bathed in soft light and subtle chiaroscuro effects—where shadows and sparkle mingle and every guest becomes part of the art.
In true Purim fashion, a few hidden delights will be uncovered as the evening unfolds.
All proceeds benefit the Judaic Art Fund.
