MORE INFO

We are over the moon to announce that Tina Freeland will be teaching Iyengar Yoga classes at Woodlands for People of Colour for the next year. The classes are free to attend and have been generously funded by Iyengar Yoga UK. By supporting these classes, IYUK are giving a clear signal about their intentions in becoming a more inclusive organisation. We thank them for listening to their POC members.

Tina is the chair of the Equity Committee of Iyengar Yoga UK and is charged with ensuring that Iyengar yoga is made more equitable and inclusive. However, many yoga spaces are perceived as the domain of "white middle-class”people. Without actively engaging with different groups of people, this stereotype will remain. She would like to not only spread the benefits of yoga, but also change the perception and enable People of Colour and people from the LGBTQIA + community to feel comfortable in a yoga class.

The classes will take place in our community meeting room, which is quite a small space. It will be on a first come first serve basis so please arrive a little early to get a spot. The classes are open to all People of Colour aged 18+ and all equipment will be provided.

Iyengar Yoga is the world’s most widely practised method of yoga, developed by Yogacharya Sri B.K.S. Iyengar and is a form of Hatha Yoga that promotes the art of yoga not simply as a physical practice.

Iyengar yoga is also accessible to people of all abilities because of its use of props – such as foam bricks, blocks, belts and even chairs, that enable the practitioner to experience the essence of each asana no matter their physical capability.

This means that every body is able to work to develop their strength, stability and mobility due to the teacher’s ability to adapt poses and therefore make classes inclusive, creating equal access for everyone.

Tina had been practicing Iyengar Yoga for over 20 years before she decided that she wanted to be a teacher. She began because yoga was recommended to help with her back problems and continued because of the benefits to her physical health and general well-being. Tina was attracted to the Iyengar method because it is authentic, and incorporates all aspects of the ancient yoga tradition.
