Cannabis use is extremely common despite what politicians pretend. Half of all adults have tried cannabis at least once, it’s the most commonly consumed drug in Australia. Both major parties continue to pretend no one consumes cannabis and if they do they are criminals.
There is decades of evidence showing the “war on cannabis” just increases risks to the community. Experts want cannabis to be legalised, they’re waiting for political parties to grow a backbone and get on with it. The current policy settings around cannabis benefit organised crime who make billions in crooked profits every year.
Many of the harms currently caused by cannabis are due to the illegal nature of the market meaning people don’t know what they are consuming.
The Greens policy is to legalise cannabis, creating a new green industry with high quality jobs and millions in tax revenue for the community. It would create a safe, regulated supply, including Responsible Service of Cannabis laws, so you absolutely know what’s in it, can make an informed choice and how to consume it safely.
