Jane Tapley is currently the special events organiser for the Theatre Royal Bath. She lectures regularly to theatre going societies, the National Trust, and history and fine arts groups. She is an author and researcher of theatre programme notes on Hamlet, Sheridan's The Rivals and Jane Austen's Emma, as well as being a consultant to various TV productions of Jane Austen.
This talk examines the atmosphere and behaviour in and around the Georgian theatre – the irresponsibility of actors, the impotence of managers, the tears and tyranny of audiences. The lack of discipline both on stage and front of house is astonishing to modern audiences. Plays were under rehearsed, had very short runs and the audiences went to the theatre to be seen as much as to see the play but nevertheless the play generally went all right on the night…
