About this Event
Jaimie Nagle's background isn't in pottery, yet for the past eight years she's made a living from making objects for everyday use fro her home on O‘ahy. Jaimie spent 2 years studying poetry at the University of Washington's esteemed Creative Writing MFA program. There she became quite obsessed with the power of language and experimental poetry. She moved to Oahu to deepen her understanding of experimental poetry where she received her PhD in English Literature from the University of Hawai‘i, studying under now professor emeritus Susan M. Schultz.
While writing her dissertation, Jaimie took a wheel-throwing class and became instantly hooked. It was amazing to create something tangible, that you could hold and break and mend. From then on, her love affair with clay grew. After publishing her first book, Anyjar (Black Radish, 2017) and giving birth to her first child, Jaimie focused on her ceramics practice, making functional art for the home. Poetry has taken a backseat to pottery for nearly a decade, until now.
It's Personal is Jaimie's first show incorporating the pottery she loves to make with poems she's battled to write. The title, taken from Mary Rufle's poem "A Minor Personal Matter" is an investigation between the relationship between object and self. Jaimie's pots often depict her daily life in Ka‘a‘awa where she lives and creates. Her family, pets, and the natural landscape are inspirations for the imagery and texture of her pots, but as a poet, Jaimie feels most comfortable removed from a scene. Jaimie's long time poetry "mother," Gertude Stein, has inspired the poems that correspond to the pots she created for this show, focusing on perception of a singular moment rather than the object's singular meaning.
