About Al Muirhead:
Al Muirhead is the embodiment of musical mastery, having achieved what many aspire to—becoming a master of numerous skills. Known as the "Elder Statesman of Jazz Trumpet in Alberta," Al has inspired generations through his sweet, melodic trumpet solos, composing and arranging for ensembles of all sizes, and mentoring young musicians. At 89, with no plans of slowing down, Al continues to make his mark on the Canadian jazz scene.
Remarkably, Al began his solo career at the age of 79 and has since become a two-time JUNO-nominated artist. His solo discography includes five critically acclaimed albums: It's About Time (2014), a collaboration with his lifelong friend Tommy Banks; Oop! (2016), featuring JUNO-winning saxophonist P.J. Perry; Northern Adventures (2017); Undertones (2018); and Live From Frankie's and the Yardbird (2021). Most recently, Al was featured on the Hutchinson Andrew Trio's The Senator, a tribute to his dear friend Tommy Banks.
Part of Al’s extraordinary career has spanned decades and includes performing as a backup musician to musical legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Diana Krall, Paul Anka, Guido Basso, Rosemary Clooney, and P.J. Perry. His legacy as a sideman on 26 albums is just as impressive as his solo work. In 2008, he recorded All the Stars Aren't in the Sky with an all-star ensemble, a limited release that showcased his supreme artistry.
Throughout his life, Al has reached numerous milestones. He performed with the Regina Symphony, served as Assistant Conductor of the Regina Police Boys' Band, and opened Arcade Music in Calgary in 1966. He was the Music Director for CBC’s On Stage in the 1970’s, toured Japan with the Frank Mills Orchestra, performed in the 1988 Winter Olympics under Tommy Banks, and toured Europe with the New Orleans Connection Dixieland Band. Since the '90s, Al has been the Music Director for the Calgary Stampede Youth Talent Show, mentoring many young musicians, including Johnny Summers of the Calgary Jazz Orchestra.
