- Build a Rainbow Kampung as we merge the dioramas together into a rainbow village at the exhibition space!

Learn how to craft your own little slice of home in our diorama-making workshop and make your mark as part of our community art installation, It Takes A Kampung. Bring your parents, friends, and loved ones along to enjoy an afternoon reimagining your favourite memories and scenes as adorable little dioramas!
The workshop will cover techniques using paper and different tools to create miniature, stylised furniture, objects, people, and even pets! Participants will also be taught how to plan, layout, and assemble a diorama.
At the end of the workshop, the rainbow dioramas will be attached together to form a rainbow village art installation that we're calling It Takes A Kampung.
The workshop is open to participants of any skill level and no prior art experience is required to join. Participants will be guided by an experienced art and media instructor in a comfortable and safe space for the queer community and allies.
Workshop details
1. Bring photos of your rainbow family, loved ones or a favourite memory.
Bring photos and images to help inspire you in creating your rainbow room! Participants will also be given time to share their stories and memories with one another, as we celebrate stories of all flavours of queer love and acceptance together.
You can also bring along pictures and artwork as references to add more creative flair to your diorama!
2. Learn how to make a colourful rainbow room and reimagine your favourite memories and scenes from your photos.
A fun and colourful assortment of materials and tools, including coloured and patterned papers, hand-carved stamps, colour pencils, markers, and much more, will be provided as part of the workshop for participants to use.
We also encourage you to bring in any sentimental or favoured materials as well if you’d like to add it to your dioramas.
You will be taught techniques to recreate and stylise details from your photos to create a vibrant and meaningful diorama using different materials. Don’t worry about having any prior art experience! Our instructor will guide you, cheer you on, and help you bring your vision to life!
3. Connect your fabulous room to the Rainbow Kampung and watch the community grow!
Take part in Rainbow Families: Dear Home’s community art installation, It Takes A Kampung! This installation attaches all of the dioramas made by participants and visitors of our exhibition to form a rainbow village that grows throughout the duration of the exhibition. We'll be bringing together an assortment of different and creative queer homes and facades to form a beautiful queer village - our own Rainbow Kampung!
We invite you to come learn, have fun, make mistakes and messes, as well as share a little piece of your own story with us, in our It Takes A Kampung diorama-making workshop <3
Workshop Cost
The price of this workshop is $5 per person, and includes an assortment of materials and tools for participants to use.
Workshop Dates
The workshops will be held on 3 & 4 June and 10 & 11 June (the first 2 weekends on June) from 3pm–5pm, for a total of 4 sessions. We strongly encourage you to arrive at our venue at least 5 minutes before the start of the workshop, to ensure that we can start on time.
Important Note for Participants
- Please bring along a jacket or hoodie as the venue can get quite cold.
- Feel free to bring any sentimental or favoured materials if you would like.
- Photos of the workshop sessions and created dioramas may be shared publicly on social media. Please inform us if you have any concerns regarding your photo(s) being shared online.
