About this Event
Come and explore Islington’s New River Walk and discover nature in the middle of Islington as well as centuries of history. The New River walk looks like a delightful water feature landscaped within a narrow park. In fact, the New River was built over 400 years ago to bring fresh water to London. Discover stories of royalty and goldsmiths, engineers and walksmen as well as London’s thirst for clean water. There is wildlife aplenty as well as beautiful trees and shrubs.
UPDATE
The restoration project underway on the New River walk is overrunning and so we are revising our walk
We will still meet at the St Paul’s Road entrance to the New River Walk (https://goo.gl/maps/viZQ7VNAhGDgAFjv5) but instead of following the New River to Canonbury we are going to head north to see how the waterway has influenced Petherton Road. We will then walk through Aberdeen Park past some of the grand 19th century villas of Highbury before we reach Highbury Fields. This is Islington’s largest green space and we can enjoy nature as well as the fine Georgian architecture. The walk will finish with easy access to the transport links at Highbury Corner or Highbury Barn.
