The SFS Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, in collaboration with the Unity Productions Foundation, is delighted to present “Islam and the Black American: Two Decades—and Many Gray Hairs—Later” at Georgetown University.
This event will feature an insightful keynote address by Dr. Sherman Jackson, a distinguished scholar renowned for his work on Islamic studies and African American Muslim communities. In “Islam and the Blackamerican,” Dr. Sherman Jackson explored how Islam has historically provided spiritual and social empowerment, examining the challenges Black Muslims face in navigating their dual identities within both American and Muslim communities. Jackson critiques the dominant narratives of both the Black nationalist and immigrant Muslim communities, advocating for a uniquely Black American Islamic identity.
In this lecture, he looks back at his thesis and charts the development of the community.
Joining him will be Dr. Fatimah Fanusie, whose expertise in the dynamics of Muslim communities in America provides crucial insights into contemporary challenges and contributions. Her research focuses on the intersections of Islam and African American experiences.
The discussion will be moderated by UPF’s Alex Kronemer, a distinguished producer and writer known for his impactful works, including The Great Muslim American Road Trip and Prince Among Slaves. These productions highlight the rich and often underappreciated narratives of Muslims in America, with The Great Muslim American Road Trip exploring the diverse Muslim experiences across the United States and Prince Among Slaves recounting the story of an African Muslim prince enslaved in America in the 18th century.
UPF’s work is instrumental in promoting intercultural understanding and bringing these important stories to a wider audience. Together, these experts will lead a comprehensive exploration of the history and evolution of Muslims in America, tracing their journey from their African kingdoms of origin to their current status in American society
Following the presentation, there will be a panel discussion and a Q&A session with all three speakers, offering attendees an opportunity to delve deeper into the topics discussed and engage directly with the experts. This lecture is part of American Muslim Pathways, a nationwide lecture series on the history of Muslims in America, from their African kingdoms of origin to today, spearheaded by Unity Productions Foundation with support provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
