SOWETO PRiDE 2025 - 21 YEARS OF PRIDE: A CELEBRATION AND PROTEST
Synopsis:
This year marks 21 years of Soweto Pride a powerful milestone that celebrates two decades of resistance, visibility, community, and queer joy led by the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW).
Soweto Pride has always been more than just a gathering. It is both a celebration of who we are and a protest against what still threatens our existence. In honour of this historic year, we are intentionally separating the Pride March and the Celebration into two distinct days each with its own purpose, energy, and message.
πŸ“£ The March – Friday, 26 September 2025
πŸ“ Vilakazi Street, Orlando West
πŸ•› Starts at 12PM
The March is where we take to the streets united; visible, and unapologetic. We do this to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges facing LGBTQIA+ people, particularly in under-resourced, township, and rural communities. These include rising hate crimes, lack of access to healthcare and shelter, mental health support, and the persistence of stigma and violence.
We march because while our Constitution may be progressive, the lived realities of many queer people remain unsafe and unequal. We also march in response to the growing global anti-gender movement, largely funded and driven by right-wing forces seeking to erase queer existence across the continent.
This year, we are calling on all community members, allies, and influencers to join us in numbers. Your presence matters. Your voice matters. Showing up for the March is an act of solidarity, resistance, and love specially for the young queer people who are still learning that their lives, identities, and futures matter.
πŸŽ‰ The Celebration | Saturday, 27 September 2025
πŸ“ Ubuntu Kraal, Orlando West
πŸ•™ Gates open at 10AM | Celebration runs till 6PM
Saturday is about joy, love, community, and freedom, the things that make us beautifully and radically queer. It’s a day to dance, connect, support queer vendors and artists, and revel in the resilience of our people.
But our joy is not disconnected from our struggle. We celebrate because we survive. We dance because we resist. And we gather in joy as a form of protest, healing, and liberation.
Why You Should Come to Both
We are asking our community and especially our younger generation to show up for both days.
Because Pride is not just about the party. It’s about being seen. Being counted. And demanding the world we deserve.
The March is our voice: loud, unified, and brave.
The Celebration is our spirit: joyful, free, and whole.
Join us for both. Let us honour the work of those who came before us and pass the baton forward to a new generation of queer activists, artists, and dreamers who are fighting for a future where Pride is no longer a protest, but a parade of equality truly achieved.
