JD ALLEN
Hailed by The New York Times as “a tenor saxophonist with an enigmatic, elegant, and hard-driving style,” JD Allen is a bright light on today’s international jazz scene. His unique and compelling voice on the instrument has earned Allen years of critical attention, including Album of the Year Awards in Critics Polls in countless notable publications not limited to The New York Times, The Atlantic, NPR, Downbeat, and JazzTimes.
Though he hails from Detroit, Allen apprenticed largely in New York, where he worked and studied with jazz legends including Betty Carter, Lester Bowie, George Cables, and Ron Carter. In 2008, Allen began an association with Sunnyside Records to record “I AM – I AM” with his brand new trio. The album garnered rave reviews, and Allen was named Rising Star in Downbeat’s 2011 Critics Poll. In 2009, he released his follow-up, “Shine!,” which was named among the top 10 albums of the year in over 25 publications worldwide, including JazzTimes, Village Voice, NPR, and The Boston Globe.
Allen’s 2011 record not only garnered a four-star review from Downbeat; it was also subject of an in-depth piece in JazzTimes, and a short film that was produced in conjunction with the record (and directed by Mario Lathan) was awarded Best Short Film by the Jazz Journalist Association.
In 2012, Allen began recording for Savant Records, where he has recorded an additional seven records, including “Love Stone,” his long-awaited and critically acclaimed 2018 ballad record.
