Tenor saxophone prodigy Isaac Randel returns home to Dunedin to perform a tribute to John Coltrane at Hanover Hall on September 19 with some of the Wellington jazz scene's brightest new talents. Having emerged as a significant new talent on the Dunedin jazz scene, Randel has recently spent three years studying jazz performance at the New Zealand School of Music and has there formed a fruitful collaboration with pianist Nico Buhne and double bassist Jack Harris. Along with local drummer Carl Woodward, this quartet will present a variety of originals and standards made famous by John Coltrane, including material from his early, middle and late periods.
Providing support on the night will be the Dunedin Youth Jazz Orchestra, directed by Bill Martin, who will be presenting some contemporary Big Band arrangements of John Coltrane compositions, including the classics “Moment’s Notice”, “Giant Steps” and “Vierd Blues”. Soprano saxophonist Ethan Burton will be featured with extended solos on these tunes, as well as solo trumpet Louis Robertson. Rhythm section players Matthew Tait (piano), George Couper (guitar), Guthrie Wakelin (bass) and Amelia Ross (drums) will be kept on their toes by the complex rhythms and fast tempos in these professional arrangements.
Isaac Randel came to prominence on the Dunedin jazz scene with a number of sold-out shows at the Dish Cafe, a venue which he performed at during his final years at high school. Randel was awarded a scholarship to the New Zealand School of Music for being accepted with the best audition for all performers in his year. He performs regularly on the Wellington Jazz scene as the leader of his own quartet and a sideman with various groups. He has performed in Dunedin with the Mike Gaches Quintet and has performed at Hanover Hall as part of the Bill Martin Quintet.
