Tegan Smyth – CEO & Founder of Grassroots Future
Get inspired by Tegan's journey of supporting communities from the ground up and learn how you can do the same, no matter the size of your business. Grassroots Future (s88 Charity) is focused on empowering grassroots movements and building capacity within the refugee and asylum seeker community in Hong Kong. They operate on three key pillars: Education, Well-being, and Community Outreach. Their community outreach includes organising cultural events and initiatives that highlight refugee culinary talents and creating employment or self-development opportunities for the community.
Why is food important?
Food is tied to culture, family, and history—an essential connection for displaced individuals. Grassroots Future uses food as a way to break down stereotypes and foster societal integration through events and activities that showcase the culinary talents of the refugee community.
One of their key initiatives is ‘Table of Two Cities: Untold Stories of Refugees in Hong Kong’, a bilingual publication launching in November. Featuring 14 interviews and 32 recipes, the book amplifies the voices of refugees in Hong Kong through the medium of food. Proceeds directly support those featured and Grassroots Future’s ongoing work.
Kahoot Quiz Winners: The two winners at the meetup will receive a copy of 'Table of Two Cities: Untold Stories of Refugees in Hong Kong' & a T-shirt from Tong Chong Kitchen!
